Shumway Cosmetic Surgery, accredited by the Joint Commission and awarded the Gold Seal of Approval which reflects our commitment to excellence and quality patient care, offers eyelid surgery to local residents requiring cosmetic surgery.
While you might not feel much different than you did at twenty-something, that isn’t what the outside world sees. But why should you look different than you feel? The good news is you don’t have to if you don’t want to.
At Shumway Cosmetic Surgery, we know how to make your outer beauty shine as brightly as your inner beauty. You don’t want to look like a different person, and Dr. Shumway understands. You want to look like yourself – but a more refreshed and relaxed version. That is why we offer the eyelid lift, also known as blepharoplasty. This procedure removes excess skin from the eyelids to give you a more vibrant and youthful look.
As we age, tiny fat deposits can begin to appear around the eyes and skin begins to lose its elasticity. This lack of elasticity in the eyelids can cause the eyelids to droop and drag over time, and can lead to excess skin to appear around the eyes. This skin causes wrinkles around the eyes and bags under under the lower eyelid. On top of these aesthetic issues, the drooping skin on the upper eyelid can obstruct your eyesight and prevent you from seeing clearly.
An eyelid lift, also known as blepharoplasty or eyelid rejuvenation surgery, is a successful way to correct these problems. The procedure involves removing the fatty deposits and potentially small amounts of muscle and skin around the eyes. The result is looking rested, refreshed, and alert.
Blepharoplasty may also be performed to treat ptosis, a medical condition in which the eyelids droop because of weak muscles or nerve damage. This condition causes the eyelids to sag and obstruct vision.
There are many reasons that you might opt for an eyelid lift: puffy eyelids, excess eyelid skin, under-eye bags, or impaired vision. Whatever the reason, it’s important that you have realistic expectations and are in good physical health.
Many surgeons agree that the “ideal” age for blepharoplasty patients is 35 or older; however, an eye lift may be appropriate for younger patients in certain circumstances. Eyelid surgery is a great option to help you look younger and improve your looks, but it is important to go into a blepharoplasty procedure with realistic expectations. Make sure to talk to your surgeon about what your goals are of the procedure, and consult with them on what the results of eyelid surgery will look like.
Shumway Cosmetic Surgery specializes in the aesthetic enhancement of our patients. We do this through laser and cosmetic surgery procedures performed in our La Jolla office, which is in the San Diego area of beautiful Southern California.
Dr. Robert A. Shumway, MD, FACS is an expert in the field of cosmetic surgery. He has studied at the nation’s most prestigious medical centers and has taught cosmetic surgery techniques at Duke, UCLA, and UCSD. As a trustee of the California Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, he stresses the importance of the healing process, carefully instructing his patients on post-operative care.
If both the upper eyelids and lower eyelids have surgery performed on them, the process will take about two hours. In general, you will have a local anesthesia injected near the eye in order to minimize the pain, along with an oral sedation. In some cases, an IV sedation may be used as well.
Your surgeon at Shumway Cosmetic Surgery will begin by operating on the upper eyelids, cutting along the natural lines and creases in order to minimize scarring. This cut along the natural lines of the eyelids separates the tissue from the skin and will also get rid of the unnecessary skin and fat. Once this is completed, tiny stitches will close the incision.
The lower eyelids will be the next part of a blepharoplasty procedure, and there are several different techniques for this portion of the procedure. The surgeon will make an incision either along the eyelash margin under the eye or cut inside the eyelid itself. Your surgeon will make a decision on which method to use based on examination and their expertise.
After your eyelid lift, you can expect to experience some swelling, numbness, and bruising. Some patients also report mild to heavy tearing, double vision, and sensitivity to light. However, your eyelids should look normal in one to two weeks.
As time goes by and you continue to heal, it is important that you protect your eyes from the sun – now you have an excuse to buy those designer sunglasses you’ve been eyeing! Scarring may take three to six months to fade.
The cost of your eyelid surgery may be covered by your insurance if your sagging eyelids interfere with your vision, although it is uncommon for insurance companies to cover the procedure. We offer payment plans and work closely with CareCredit™ to help you with the cost of your eyelid surgery.
