Breast Lift Surgery and Breast Reduction Surgery in San Diego

American women are among some of the most buxom in the world. In the past two decades, the average American woman’s bra size leapt from 34B to 34DD. Unfortunately, not every frame can support disproportionately large breasts. More importantly, not every woman wants them.

At the same time, larger breasts in particular are prone to drooping and sagging due to pregnancy, aging, and weight loss. Although modern bra technology helps to create the illusion of perky breasts, women want to love the way they look when they take off their bras, too.

At Shumway Cosmetic Surgery, we understand the important role that a woman’s breasts play in her confidence and self-esteem, and we are equipped to address a range of breast concerns.  For some women, breast reduction surgery is the only way to relieve physical pain and discomfort caused by the weight of excess breast tissue. For others, a breast lift is the answer to restoring the firmness and shape of sagging breasts. At Shumway Cosmetic Surgery, we often perform breast reduction and breast lift surgery together as well.

Breast Lift Surgery

A breast lift, also known as mastopexy, is a surgical procedure that repositions the breasts to sit higher on the chest. The breast lift helps to correct sagging and tightens or firms the breasts. It may include a reduction of enlarged areolas when necessary. It’s important to note that a breast lift does not necessarily change the size or volume of the breasts, though you can combine the breast lift procedure with breast implants in order to restore lost volume or achieve a fuller, more voluptuous figure. For many women, a breast lift alone is enough to perk up their breasts and help them feel great about they way look.

A breast lift works to correct:

  • Elongated breasts
  • Sagging breasts
  • Low, downward facing nipples
  • Large areolas
  • Minor breast asymmetry

During your mastopexy procedure, local and safe IV sedation anesthesia while Dr. Shumway lifts and reshapes your breasts to improve their position and projection. Your breast lift surgery may take approximately 3-4 hours, though it could take longer if you’re having the lift done in conjunction with other procedures.

If you are unhappy with the toll aging and gravity have taken on your breasts, then maybe it’s time to talk to Dr. Shumway about having a breast lift.

Breast Reduction Surgery

Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to safely remove excess tissue from the breasts in order to alleviate discomfort and provide more proportionate contours.

Breast reduction surgery may relieve or correct:

  • Neck, shoulder, and back pain
  • Poor posture
  • Heavy, sagging breasts
  • Shoulder grooves from bra straps
  • Discomfort during exercise
  • Social and psychological stress from unwanted attention

Breast reduction surgery has a number of other aesthetic and emotional benefits as well, including:

  • Increased balance and proportion of body contours
  • More attractive silhouette in clothing
  • Lifted, firmer, and more youthful-looking breasts
  • Enhanced body image
  • Boosted confidence

On the day of your breast reduction surgery, while you are comfortable under local and IV anesthesia, Dr. Shumway will carefully remove excess glandular tissue, fat, and skin. In some cases, he may use liposuction during this part of the procedure. He will then gently reshape the breast mound, repositioning the nipple and reducing the size of the areola if necessary. After he has achieved the desired breast shape discussed during your consultation, Dr. Shumway will close the incisions with several layers of suturing and apply a soft gauze dressing.

Your breast reduction procedure may last between 3 and 4 hours. Although the incisions will scar, they will be easy to conceal with bras or swimwear, and they will fade significantly over time.

Recovering From Breast Lift or Breast Reduction Surgery

Both the breast lift and the breast reduction are major surgical procedures, and it’s important to give yourself time to recover afterward. Dr. Shumway will prescribe antibiotics and pain medication to help keep you comfortable while you recover. He will also send you home with clear and detailed instructions, and it’s crucial that you adhere to them. In general, you will want to plan for the following:

  • Rest for the first couple of days, limiting your activities.
  • Sleep on your back with head elevated.
  • Take all medications as directed
  • Wear a surgical bra 24 hours a day for 6-8 weeks
  • Avoid driving for the first week and never while on pain medication
  • Limit yourself to light activities for 10 days
  • Avoid lifting anything heavier than 5 pounds for 2 weeks
  • Limit exercise to only walking for 2 to 4 weeks
  • No smoking!

Most patients with desk jobs are able to return to work within 7-10 days and resume normal activities within 4 to 6 weeks.
